Where to eat in Monistrol-d'Allier

Down in the gorge, between the steep descent from Rochegude and the long climb to Saugues: where to eat in the village, when each place is open, and what to pack before you leave.

Lunch menu€22

If you are wondering where to eat in Monistrol-d'Allier, the simplest answer is L'Auberge des Amis on the Route du Gévaudan, the only place open 7 days a week, all year round, from breakfast (from 6:30am) to dinner (until 10pm), with a €22 lunch menu. In season, two other restaurants join it: Le Repos du Pèlerin on Rue des Jacquets, and L'Allier des Saveurs at Le Vivier, whose current opening status is unconfirmed. Before you arrive, note that there is no cash machine in the village and no confirmed grocery shop.

Eating in Monistrol-d'Allier when you arrive on the GR65

Monistrol is the low point of the Saint-Privat-d'Allier to Saugues stage: a village at around 600 m, tucked into the bottom of the gorge, reached after a steep descent from Rochegude. From Saint-Privat it is 7 to 7.4 km, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours on foot, so most pilgrims cross the metal bridge over the Allier in late morning, right on time for lunch. Between Saint-Privat and Monistrol, the hamlets on the way (Combriaux, Rochegude, Pratclaux) have no services at all.

So food comes up twice: where to have lunch before tackling the long climb to Escluzels and Montaure, and what to carry, since Wise Pilgrim reports no services between Monistrol and Saugues. Those staying the night need dinner and an early breakfast. If you are planning the morning's walk, our guide to the Saint-Privat to Monistrol stage covers the descent in detail.

L'Auberge des Amis: the Monistrol-d'Allier restaurant open every day

Set in the former Le Pain de Sucre hotel-restaurant at the entrance to the village, right on the GR65, L'Auberge des Amis opened its dining room on 14 September 2026. The idea is simple: a walker should be able to find a meal at any time of day, without wondering what day it is or whether the season is over.

Breakfast6:30–11am
Lunch12–2pm
Snacks3–6pm
Dinner7–10pm

The €22 lunch menu

Served from noon to 2pm, this is the full walker's meal: starter of the day, dish of the day or a croque-monsieur / croque-madame, a selection of regional cheeses, dessert of the day or fruit salad, coffee or tea, and a quarter-litre of wine with water. Cheese before dessert, the Auvergne way, is not optional. The dish of the day is also available on its own for €14.

The menu: starters, mains and pizzas

Starters are €9: tomato and mozzarella salad with black olive tapenade, warm goat's cheese salad with lardons, Caesar salad, a plate of regional charcuterie, quiche lorraine (the starter of the day is €8). Mains are €16: croque-monsieur, homemade beef burger (both with fresh fries and salad), sliced chicken with mushrooms, lardons and wholegrain mustard served with rice, and salmon steak with beurre blanc and rice pilaf.

Pizzas are €12: Margherita, Reine, 4 cheese, Royale and the Savoyarde (cream, lardons, potatoes, reblochon, mozzarella), the one that disappears fastest after a day of climbing. To finish, desserts are €8: regional cheese board, vanilla crème brûlée, profiteroles, giant rum baba or red fruit pavlova; the tart of the day and fresh fruit salad are €6. The full menu is online on our menus page.

Between services: afternoon snacks and sandwiches

Arriving at 3:30pm is no problem. From 3pm to 6pm, the snack menu is €10: chicken or salmon club sandwich, ham and mozzarella or tomato, mozzarella and pesto panini, chicken wrap or kebab-style wrap. And at any time of day there are fresh sandwiches at €8: ham and butter, rosette salami with gherkins, tuna and cream cheese, chicken, egg and mayonnaise, or a vegetarian option with cucumber, carrot, avocado, egg and cream cheese.

The walker's breakfast and packed lunch

The walker's breakfast (€9) is served from 6:30am, which is exactly when you want to be heading off to make the most of the cool air on the climb to the Madeleine chapel. It is hearty, designed to carry you up to the plateau. The packed lunch to take away (€14) is prepared in the morning on request: mention it the evening before and it will be ready when you leave.

The bar, the rooms and pilgrim services

The bar serves draught and bottled beer, regional wines, cocktails and hot drinks; it is where the day's stage gets retold. The rooms range from the big fireplace room to the vaulted room carved into the rock, plus a billiards lounge and a games room. For pilgrims: credential stamp, laundry and drying, secure bike storage and Wi-Fi.

Other restaurants in Monistrol-d'Allier

The village has a few other places to eat, mostly seasonal. Here is what we know about them at the time of writing, nothing more: opening hours change from year to year, and a quick phone call saves disappointment.

Le Repos du Pèlerin

A bar-tabac-restaurant with a walkers' gîte at 365 Rue des Jacquets, in the heart of the village (+33 4 71 57 23 57). It is a long-standing address on the Way, with a tea room and concerts. It is seasonal: April to September according to its website, while the town hall gives a slightly longer period. According to its site, meals are served from noon to 1:30pm and 7pm to 9pm, with a pilgrim welcome from 3:30pm. One regional listing mentions Saturday closing; check on the spot.

L'Allier des Saveurs

A restaurant-bar at Le Vivier, by the river near the supervised swimming beach, with a large terrace. Its tourist listing (updated November 2025) describes brasserie cooking at lunch, more refined dishes in the evening, a short menu built with local producers and a menu of the day from €16; the town hall listed it as open Wednesday to Monday. Its website was not responding when we researched this guide, so check before you go (+33 4 71 09 17 27).

Gîtes and local producers

Several places to stay in the village and nearby hamlets (Gîte du Pont Eiffel, Le Ricochet, La Tsabone, Gîte de la Madeleine at Escluzels, Le Vivier campsite, among others) may offer meals to their guests; this has not been checked one by one, so ask when you book. The town hall also lists two producers: La Ferme de Doux Chêne at Douchanez and the Chany farm at Ramenac.

Is there a grocery shop or ATM in Monistrol-d'Allier?

There is no ATM in Monistrol: the nearest are in Saugues. No grocery shop can be confirmed either: the village bakery-grocery was liquidated in 2022 and the town hall's current list of businesses does not include one. Some pilgrim guides still mention "a small shop": bring supplies and cash with you anyway.

In practice: withdraw money in Le Puy-en-Velay before setting off, keep enough cash for a gîte that might not take cards, and buy snacks for two days. Water is easier: several drinking water points are mapped in the village, and a tap is reported opposite the junction with the D589.

Picnics and packed lunches: what to bring for the climb to Saugues

From Monistrol to Saugues it is 12 to 13.5 km and 3.5 to 5 hours of walking, including roughly 450 to 500 m of almost continuous climbing over the first few kilometres. The official route description only lists water points along the way: the trough at Escluzels, a fountain at Roziers and another near the meeting house in Le Vernet. A pilgrim reported the Le Vernet snack bar closed since January 2025. In short, set off with a full pack.

  • The auberge's packed lunch (€14), ordered the evening before, or two fresh sandwiches (€8 each) picked up in the morning.
  • Water for the whole climb: fill your bottles in the village before crossing the bridge.
  • Sweet and savoury snacks bought in Le Puy or Saint-Privat, since no grocery is confirmed here.
  • A proper breakfast before leaving: the Madeleine climb goes better on a full stomach.

The climb is described step by step in our guide to the Monistrol to Saugues stage.

Eating before and after Monistrol on the trail

Before: the Saint-Privat to Monistrol section has no services, so leave Saint-Privat with water and a snack for the descent. After: Saugues, at 960 m, is the first well-equipped town, with ATMs, a pharmacy and a market on Friday mornings. You will usually reach it in the afternoon. And if you decide to spend an extra day at the bottom of the gorge, our rest day in Monistrol guide suggests a plan, meals included.
