What are the best things to do in the Allier gorges? From Monistrol-d'Allier, a village of 226 people tucked into the bottom of the gorges on the GR65, you can raft the river (from age 10, €55 for a half day, season 4 April to 18 October 2026), try canyoning or climbing, climb up to the Sainte-Madeleine cave chapel, cross a bridge built by the Eiffel company and swim at the supervised Plage du Vivier in summer. All about 27 km from Le Puy-en-Velay.

Here two basalt gorges meet in a deep, narrow site, and the Ance du Sud flows into the Allier right below the village. The landscape does the work: white water, cliffs, lava frozen into columns, and centuries of human history clinging to the slopes. Below, activity by activity, is what you need to know, whether you are a walker taking a break on the Le Puy route or staying in the area.

Rafting in the Allier gorges: how does it work?

Rafting is Monistrol's signature activity. The outfitter based in the village is Tonic Aventure (+33 4 71 57 23 90), the only one listed by the town hall, with its main base in Langeac. For 2026 the Monistrol base runs from 4 April to 18 October, daily from 9 am to 6.30 pm, with changing rooms and hot showers.

The most popular option is the half day:

  • 6-person raft with a qualified guide, about 2.5 hours on the water;
  • meet at 9.15 am (back around 1 pm) or 2 pm (back around 6 pm), with a shuttle back;
  • from age 10, must be able to swim, 130 kg maximum, closed shoes;
  • €55 per person including the wetsuit; a full day with picnic starts at €107.

The rapids have names that set the tone: la Benne, le Trou du Curé and le Rince Sinus (roughly, "the sinus rinser"). Online booking is open until 5.30 pm the day before; in July and August, book several days ahead.

Canoeing, canyoning and "randohydro"

Half-day canyoning also starts from Monistrol: from age 12, must swim, from €59. Randohydro, a mix of hiking and swimming down the river, is open from age 10 (must swim). Canoeing and kayaking start at age 6 with an adult and swimming ability; according to Tonic, rental trips mostly run on the Langeac and Pradel sections, so check the starting point when you book.

Via ferrata, zipline and climbing: the gorges gone vertical

Tonic Aventure also runs via ferrata and ziplines, including one that flies over the Allier facing the village. Prices, minimum ages and time slots for these are not published in detail, so call +33 4 71 57 23 90 before you go.

How do you walk up to the Sainte-Madeleine chapel?

This is the visit not to miss. The Chapelle Sainte-Madeleine is set into a basalt cavity above the village, towards the hamlet of Escluzels. Its neoclassical front, with a carved door, two balustered bays and a round window under a triangular pediment, seems pressed against the rock. A text from 1312 may already mention an oratory here, and tombs cut into the rock were used in the 14th and 17th centuries. The chapel has been a listed historic monument since 10 October 2005.

There are two ways up: the GR65, which leaves the village by the Montée de la Madeleine and passes an old basalt-column quarry, or the old Saugues road. There is no official time for the direct climb; as a rough guide, allow 20 to 30 minutes of steady uphill. The chapel is open daily from 1 July to 31 August, free; out of season, groups of 10 or more can arrange a visit through the town hall.

The PR650 "circuit des orgues" loop

To make a proper walk of it, follow the PR650: a 5.6 km loop, about 2 hours, with 309 m of ascent, starting from the church (parking there). It crosses basalt flows shaped by centuries of quarrying, follows a path suspended above the river, passes the Sainte-Madeleine chapel and the hidden hamlet of La Valette. The official route sheet warns that the path becomes narrow and tricky after waypoint 2, so wear proper hiking shoes. If you are a pilgrim, the same climb opens the GR65 stage from Monistrol to Saugues.

The Eiffel bridge, the basalt organs and the Ance du Sud

In the middle of the village, the Eiffel bridge spans the Allier. This metal lattice bridge was built by the Eiffel company in 1887–1888, right after the Garabit viaduct and the framework of the Statue of Liberty. It has a 69.15 m span and a 2.40 m deck; a footbridge was added in 1933 and the structure was fully restored in 2003. Free access.

Its story is the river's story. A stone bridge is recorded in 1467 and was swept away by a flood in 1559; people then crossed by ferry for centuries, and later by a toll suspension bridge built in the 1830s. The great flood of 1866, which reached 9.60 m, carried that one away too. The Eiffel bridge replaced it some twenty years later.

Around the village, look up at the basalt organs: columns of cooled lava that were quarried over the centuries. Just below the village, the Ance du Sud, which flows 40 km down from the Margeride hills of Lozère, joins the Allier.

The Poutès dam and the Allier salmon

Monistrol is also an electricity village, lit as early as 1909 thanks to the mill on the Ance. Its hydroelectric plant, running since 1927, is fed by dams on the Ance du Sud and by the Poutès dam, upstream in the commune of Alleyras. Together they produce around thirty megawatts.

The Allier is home to what EDF calls "the last wild salmon strain in Western Europe". To help the fish migrate, Poutès was completely redesigned: preparatory work in 2017, main works from 2019 to the end of 2021, commissioning and inauguration in 2022. The dam was lowered from about 18 m to about 7 m and fitted with movable gates that open during migration periods. Worth knowing: salmon fishing has been banned on the Loire-Allier system since 1994.

EDF warns that hydro plants can start up at any time, causing the water to rise quickly downstream. Respect access and swimming bans near the installations and always keep an eye on the water level.

Where can you swim in Monistrol-d'Allier?

The Plage du Vivier is the village's only supervised swimming spot. Lifeguards are on duty from 8 July to 31 August, free of charge: Monday to Friday 2 pm to 5 pm, weekends and public holidays 1 pm to 7 pm. These hours are published each year and may change, so check with the town hall. Outside those times, the Allier remains a cool, changeable mountain river.

What is there to see within 30 minutes of Monistrol?

  • Saint-Privat-d'Allier (7 km, about 10 min): a priory linked to La Chaise-Dieu since 1046, and nearby the Rochegude chapel perched above the Allier.
  • Saugues (18.7 km, about 22 min): the Musée fantastique de la Bête du Gévaudan tells the story of the Beast that terrorised the area from 1764 to 1767 in 22 scenes (+33 4 71 77 64 22, open mainly in summer, check hours).
  • Prades (16.7 km, about 24 min): the basalt organs of the Roche Servière above the gorges, with the Romanesque chapel of Sainte-Marie-des-Chazes close by.
  • Le Puy-en-Velay (about 27 km): allow 35 to 40 minutes on the gorge road.

For something slower: the regional "Cévenol" train between Clermont-Ferrand and Nîmes stops at Monistrol station, and the ride itself is one of the finest ways to see the gorges. In summer, the Train Bleu du Sud also runs a few heritage trips in the upper Allier; confirm dates with the Langeac tourist office (+33 4 71 77 05 41). Staying a few days? Our guide to a rest day in Monistrol suggests an easy-going programme.

When is the best time to visit the Allier gorges?

White-water activities run from April to mid-October. July and August are the only months when everything is open at once: the Sainte-Madeleine chapel, supervised swimming and all guided trips. They are also the busiest. June and September are a good compromise for rafting and hiking with fewer people, though the chapel can then only be seen from outside. River levels depend on the weather and on water releases from the hydro plants: your guide will tell you on the day what the run looks like.

How do you get to Monistrol-d'Allier?

  • By car: on the RN589/D589 between Le Puy and Chaudes-Aigues, which runs through the village. Route planners give about 30 min from Le Puy, 22 min from Saugues and 43 min from Langeac; on these winding gorge roads, allow longer.
  • By train: Monistrol-d'Allier station is on the Cévennes line (Clermont-Ferrand to Nîmes). The line is sometimes closed for works, so check before you travel.
  • By bus: regional line H04 Saugues – Monistrol-d'Allier – Le Puy-en-Velay.
  • On foot: on the GR65, Monistrol is the stage after Saint-Privat-d'Allier.

Tip from the auberge: for a 9.15 am raft trip, have the walker's breakfast from 6.30 am, then come back for lunch after the run (€22 set menu, served 12–2 pm). For a day of canyoning or hiking, order a packed lunch to take away the evening before (€14). See where to eat in Monistrol-d'Allier or book a table.
